Have you been to visit Alnwick in Northumberland yet? Well, what are you waiting for?! Village Farm Holiday Cottages is sandwiched in between Alnmouth and Alnwick, perfectly situated within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on Northumberland's beautiful, unspoilt coast. We provide the perfect base to explore all that Northumberland has to offer.
Autumn is the most vibrant time of the year. Northumberland truly comes alive in the autumn; boasting clear mornings, dark nights and a kaleidoscope of rich colours. Fall for Northumberland this autumn and discover our hidden treasures - with wild, rugged landscapes, fascinating historic castles and gorgeous unspoilt beaches, the county has something for everyone. Catch a glimpse of Northumberland's dark side and find yourself falling in love with our little piece of paradise.
Northumberland is blessed with miles upon miles of natural coastlines, as well as rich landscapes within our National Park. This autumn, discover the rich reds and oranges on our National Park trails or enjoy a windswept walk across a beautiful beach. The only limit is your imagination!
Experience Northumberland's parks at their peak in the autumn time. Druridge Bay Country Park is just 25 minutes from our cottages and is well worth a visit; or simply enjoy a stroll around the wonderful Alnwick Gardens. Or, if you prefer pretty riverside strolls, why not try the wonderful river walk at Wallington? Gaze in awe at the changing colours of the trees and discover the picturesque walled garden during a lazy stroll alongside the meandering river.
Hadrian's Wall and Housteads Fort is a UNESCO world heritage site and is certainly a must-see during your stay in Northumberland. Wander along this ancient Roman wall passing through a wild, untamed landscape, and rediscover history whilst admiring stunning views. Enjoy a fun family day out at the Roman empire's best maintained outpost in the whole of northern Europe!
Remarkably Rich Wildlife
During the autumn time, the county's land, seas, and skies are positively teeming with wildlife. From shy red squirrels to fascinating birds and even energetic seal pups, wildlife watchers are guaranteed to be spoilt for choice.
We highly recommend taking a boat trip to the Farne Islands and discovering the adorable fluffy seal pups. September and October are the final months in which visitors are allowed to visit Inner Farne; home to one of the biggest seal colonies in the whole of Britain. Witness grey seal pups explore and play from the comfort of your own boat - if you're lucky, you may even witness one of the fluffy newborns learn to navigate the waters for the very first time! The nearby chapel, lighthouse and the surrounding landscapes all look stunning in the autumn light too. 90-minute boat trips operate from Seahouses harbour, or you can even hire a sunset cruise around the island.
If the weather is not on your side, there are many nearby activities to pass the time on those wet and windy days. Northumberland is home to many spectacular museums, castles, halls, and houses - in fact, the county boasts more castles than any other county in the whole of England!
Alnwick Castle is just 10 minutes' drive from our cottages. Rediscover history and admire impressive architecture at this simply stunning castle, which has been used as a backdrop within some of the Harry Potter films. Or, if you're willing to venture a bit further afield, the spell binding Bamburgh Castle is well worth a visit. Labelled 'the finest castle in Britain', Bamburgh makes for a fun and educational day out.
Travel 25 minutes to the enchanting Cragside House; home of 19th Century inventor Lord Armstrong. Tuck into delicious seasonal treats made by Victorian bakers or brush up on your knowledge of hydroelectricity in the Electric Room - the possibilities are truly endless! If you're a Viking history enthusiast, we highly recommend a visit to Lindisfarne Castle. Hop on over to the Holy Island and immerse yourself in the fascinating history of the Vikings for a unique and memorable experience.
Dazzling Dark Skies
See the skies come alive with thousands upon thousands of glittering stars here in Northumberland. Gaze upon the galaxy and discover our awe-inspiring dark skies; making our stars clearer, brighter and more incredible than anywhere else in England. Head to one of our designated sky gazing spots and be blown away by the beauty of our gold-tier dark skies - but make sure you wrap up warm!
The Northumberland National Park is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has been awarded International Dark Sky status. Harbottle is just 40 minutes' drive from our cottages, providing an excellent spot for spectacular stargazing. Or for a more unique experience, try the Shooting Star Supper at Battlesteads and be wined and dined among the stars.
